Workouts: June 11 - 15

I decided this week that I'd try to do 5 days in a row of yoga.  I was hoping to get in a leg workout and spinning workout, but I failed at the leg workout because I had to flex my lunch out on Monday to 30 minutes because we had to leave early to sign our life insurance documents.  I know that I had time to do a 30 min. workout...I was just kind of too lazy to do it.  I was glad that I did the 5 days of yoga, but next week I definitely need to get in more cardio again.

Monday:
Noon:  Lazy.
7:00: 80 minute Hot yoga at Go Yoga

Tuesday:
Noon:  Yoga at Capital Club - I hadn't been to one of Mary's classes for weeks and really enjoyed it.

Wednesday:
Noon:  Had to flex out my lunch because I needed to run to a couple of stores during lunch to pick up some things for the Foodie Pen Pal exchange.
7:00:  GoYoga Flow Hot Yoga 80 minutes- Holy crap we did so many vinyasa pushups - it was such a hard class!

Thursday:
Noon:  Spinning - my legs were already sore and tight, but I thought it would help.  It was nice to be back in the saddle and get sweaty from something other than hot yoga.
5:30: Yoga at Capital Club - She went a little easier on us today, I think because she made me do so many vinyasa pushups the night before, she said we wouldn't have to do many.

Friday:
Noon:  Lunchtime yoga at Capital Club - I wasn't looking forward to this because I thought it would be so hard, but it wasn't that bad.

Workouts: June 4 - 8

This week was super yoga-heavy and I was feeling it!  Every morning when I got out of bed, my back/shoulders would be SO sore!  Part of that was from a short shoulders lifting routine, but the rest was from doing wheel a couple of times.

Monday:
Noon:  30 minute leg routine - I just did some of the harder leg exercises from P90X.  I had a hair appointment that I had to leave work early for, so I took a shorter lunch.  I was pretty sore the next day.
Tuesday:
Noon:  30 minutes elliptical and 10-15 minutes shoulder/back routine.  I hadn't bee lifting anything with my upper body much because my elbow isn't 100% yet and yoga already hits those spots quite a bit.  But this short upper body workout was great, but it definitely made me sore for a couple of days when combined with 4 days of yoga.
7:00:  Candlelight hot yoga - I thought this would be more of a relaxation yoga with  a lot of stretching, but it definitely wasn't - it was a great workout.

Wednesday:
Noon:  Run and stretching - I thought it was Thursday for some reason and I was looking forward to spinning, but I realized while I was changing that it wasn't Thursday.  I didn't have any plan for a workout so I headed to the gym. When I got outside I realized it was a really nice day and I was in the mood to run (which almost never happens).  So I just took off towards COSI.  I thought I'd run a couple of streets back from COSI and then run the stairs in front a little bit.  My kneecap started bothering me about halfway around, so I had to stop and massage it and walk a bit.  I didn't run the steps because I didn't think it would be good for it and there wasn't anyway to access the steps from the side I was on because of construction.  I just jogged back to the gym and did a little stretching.

7:00:  GoYoga Flow Hot Yoga 80 minutes- This class is with our favorite instructor, Anne, but that also means that it's  hard because she's the hardest instructor I've ever taken.  The room was set WAY too hot, like last week, so it was extra sweaty.

Thursday:
Noon:  None- my stomach was bothering me and I was afraid that if I went to spinning, I get nauseous and have to leave.
5:30: Yoga at Capital Club - HARD.  We did some things in the class that were a little more advanced because it was just 3 of us.  It was a good class.  I've been able to do headstands against the wall, but I could only get one leg up when not using the wall - I think it was mostly a trust thing - I didn't think I could do it.  Next time I will!

Friday:
Noon:  Lunchtime yoga at Capital Club - this was a really hard class compared to other lunch classes.  She isn't my favorite instructor, but it was a good class. I was a little offended when she said to go into downward dog or child's pose "because I know how this class likes child's pose".  No one who was in the class ever drops down into child's pose or slacks off, so I don't know what she was talking about, but I thought it was a little rude.  I hadn't been there for a couple of weeks, so maybe in one of the classes people did, but I just thought that it was said very negatively, which isn't cool.

Workouts: May 28 - June 1

I haven't been posting my workouts because I haven't been posting about hardly anything since we've been moving.  Trust me, I was still working out (what else do people do during lunch hour?).  We did miss some night yoga classes for appointments regarding the move and such, but our schedule is settling down now.  I did miss a lunch workout this week when we went to clean the apartment, plus is was a short work week, so my workouts were a little light this week, with no weights.  I took some tough yoga classes and was feeling it.

Monday:
Memorial Day!  If floating in the pool reading magazines counts as exercise, then I worked out for a couple of hours.

Tuesday:
Noon:  Apartment cleaning
7:00:  Slow Burn then YIN hot yoga at Go Yoga 80 minutes - this class was pretty hard.  It was 80 minutes and long deep holds for each pose.  We seriously held pigeon and frog for like 5 minutes each!
Wednesday:
Noon:  45 minutes elliptical - I was a little sore from yoga and had another class that night, so I didn't want to lift.

7:00:  GoYoga Flow Hot Yoga 80 minutes- This class is with our favorite instructor, Anne, but that also means that it's  hard because she's the hardest instructor I've ever taken.  The room was set WAY too hot, like last week, so it was extra sweaty.

Thursday:
Noon:  40 minutes elliptical - same excuse as above...which may just boil down to me being lazy and wanting to read U.S. Weekly Magazine

5:30: Yoga at Capital Club - I thought I was going to slack in this class because my "slipping rib" started feeling like it was slipping again after class on Wednesday.  I was going to skip some of the vinyasa pushups so it didn't get worse, but I didn't because once I'm working out, I don't notice pain.  Luckily, it didn't feel any worse afterwards, but I was feeling a little sore all over.
Friday:
Nothing!  It's Lo's birthday, so we took the day off to do nothing!

Workouts: April 23 - 27

So again this week I did a little too much, for no good reason.  I randomly ran 4 miles one day at lunch, without having trained in any way.  The run went well, but my knees and shins were really sore at the end and for a couple of days afterwards.  I had to take it easy for a few days, but I'm feeling good now.

Monday:
Noon:  Legs and Jumprope Routine - 1 minute of each exercises listed with 1 minute of jumprope and 20 seconds rest
  • Front Lunge
  • Squat with Toe Raises
  • Single Leg Deadlift
  • Wall Sits
  • Toe Roll Iso-Lunges
  • Reverse Lunges
  • Toe Raises
  • Plie Squats
  • Standing Forward Leg Lifts
  • Hamstring Curls on a Ball
  • Hip Raises
  • Kettlebells Swings

5:30:  Yoga - hard.

Tuesday:
Noon:  1 hour Vinyasa Yoga.  Again hard.
8:30:  Reverse Co-ed Power Volleyball at Dublin Rec

Wednesday:
Noon:  4 mile run

Thursday:
Noon: Nothing - WAY too sore and my hips were killing me.
5:30: Yoga at Capital Club - this was my hardest class ever.  Not only was it one of her harder classes, which Lo agrees with, I was incredibly sore and was really struggling with holding the poses correctly.

Friday:
Noon:  45 minutes elliptical.  I just needed to take it easy...and read a US Weekly magazine.

Lessons I Didn't Learn...Part 2

Last week I posted about how I didn't learn the lesson that less is sometimes more, and I pulled a butt muscle.  I did better with my workout on Monday, and even stopped with the jump roping when my ankle got a twinge.  Every now and then my ankle will get a "twinge" that isn't a sprain or anything and it just comes and goes for a couple of days, never bothering me terribly, but noticeable enough that it makes me limp a little bit.  It kind of feels like a tendon or small bone is just shifted slightly out of place, but I don't even know if that's possible.

Anyway, the lesson that I didn't learn this week is that if you haven't been running, you shouldn't spontaneously run 4 miles.  As a matter of fact, I think the lesson is that you are supposed to increase your mileage by 10 percent at a time or something like that.  I went for 100% instead.

I put our Green BEAN Produce delivery on hold for the time being and when I temporarily suspended my account, they asked if they could pick up the bin until we wanted to start again.  We were supposed to set it out for pickup on Wednesday and forgot.  I'm saying we, because I asked Loren to do it and he forgot.  Truthfully, I should have done it myself because he was actually busy folding laundry when I asked him, and I just didn't want to get up because my feet were cold, or at least I remember that's what the excuse was when I asked him.

I remembered around 11 a.m. that we forgot to set it out and emailed the company to see if they'd come by yet.  They said no, and that they'd be heading out for deliveries soon.  They probably wouldn't have cared if I told them I forgot, but as punishment I decided that I had to run home during my lunch hour to set the bin out.  Instead of driving, I decided that I literally had to run - plus then I wouldn't be skipping my workout.

It was nice out and the run was going pretty well.  I realized halfway home that if my ankle started hurting really bad that I was screwed because Lo was busy with a consultant and couldn't come pick me up even if I needed him to.  My ankle was fine, my lungs were fine, but my knees and shins were really feeling it part way - plus my legs were still sore from Monday's workout and 2 yoga classes.  On my way back I walked for a little bit, but for the most part I was running.  I made it back with time to spare, which I was pretty excited about.  But man my knees hurt!  And they still hurt!  I skipped my lunchtime workout today to give them a rest, but yoga was hard tonight, so that didn't help.

In a way, I'm kind of proud that I ran that much.  I pretty much hate running and am "bad" at it even if I practice.  I never would have thought my lungs would have felt great since I don't do a lot of standard cardio.  Apparently my crossfit-type workouts, spinning, and yoga are enough to make a difference!  That being said, if I'm going to run again, I really should go for any sort of distance, especially while wearing Vibrams, if I haven't been running much.

Workouts: April 16 - 20

After mentioning last week that I was trying to be careful about not doing too many workouts and being concerned about over-training because I can mostly only use my legs, I totally did the opposite and ended up regretting it.  I wanted to get a good, hard leg workout in on Monday because I felt like I haven't been getting very sore and wasn't sure if I was pushing myself hard enough.  Well, I apparently pushed myself too hard and ended up straining a butt muscle - bad.  I struggled walking for most of the week really had to take it easy.  It was way deep inside my big butt, so I couldn't even massage it or ice it if I wanted to.  As a matter of fact, when we were driving home on Monday, I had my leg up on the dashboard (obviously, I wasn't driving) and I was trying to find the spot that hurt so much by digging my thumb into my butt cheek...and Mayor Coleman walked past on the sidewalk.  I don't think he saw me, but it was kind of funny.

Monday:
Noon:  100 Workout by Lean Green Bean
This is a great workout and I've done it before without hurting myself.  I wasn't sure whether the single leg exercises meant 90, 80, etc per leg or between legs.  I wasn't sure how much time the workout would take, so I split them between both legs.  I got done early enough and still had energy, so I went back through the single exercises again so it would end up being that amount per leg.  I think that may have been just a little to much - or doing them at the end of the workout was too hard since they were higher reps.  I didn't feel any pain during the workout, but history shows that I never feel the injury if it happens while I'm workout out.  Adrenaline is strong, I guess!
100 squats w/ 10# med ball
90 reverse lunges
80 single leg deadlifts
70 mountain climbers
60 bridge lifts
50 calf raises w/ 10# med ball
40 plie squats w/ kettlebell
30 skater lunges
20 knee to elbow in plank
10 burpees

10 minutes elliptical
5:30:  The instructor was sick and cancelled right before - I was not mad because I wasn't sure if I could even do it with my pulled butt muscle.
Tuesday:
Noon:  1 hour Vinyasa Yoga
Wednesday:
Noon:  35 minute elliptical
Thursday:
Noon: Spinning - I wasn't sure how it'd feel on my butt, but it was okay.  I just took it easy and didn't use high resistance.
5:30: Yoga at Capital Club
Friday:
Noon:  45 minutes elliptical

Lessons I Don't Learn

I never seem to learn the lesson that more isn't always more.  Sometimes less is more.

I pulled a butt muscle during my leg workout on Monday.  And since I never really notice injuries when I'm working out, I didn't realize it until a few hours later.  Ouch.

Workouts: April 9-13

I cooled with it extra workouts this week because I felt like I was headed into the over-training zone which I seem to find myself in every once in awhile.  I tell myself it's okay to do 2 workouts/day a few days of the week because often yoga is one of them, but the yoga classes that I take aren't exactly "relaxation" yoga - so they should count as a workout.  Since I still am mostly just using my legs because of my junk elbow, I don't want to over-train them to the point that they stop getting stronger.

Monday:
Noon:  Tabita Workout - 50 seconds on, 10 seconds rest; repeat 4x
Squat Jumps
Alternating Lunges
Mountain Climbers
Deadlifts with kettlebell
Burpees
Bridge Lifts

Elliptical for 10 minutes

5:30:  Core Power Yoga at Capital Club

Tuesday:
Noon:  Lunch with friend, no workout
830:  Reverse Power Co-ed Volleyball at Dublin Rec

Wednesday:
Noon:  25/5 workout - Each exercise 25 times, with 5 burpees between each
Elevated Single Leg Lunge
Squat to Toe Raise
Single Leg Deadlift with Kettlebell
Wall Sit
Toe Roll Iso-Lunge
Single Leg Back Lunge
Toe Raises (25 each of toes forward, pointing out, and pointing in)
Plie Squats
Standing Leg Lifts (25 each of side, back, and forward)
Hamstring Curls on Ball
Hip Raises
Kettlebell Swings

Thursday:
Noon: Spinning

5:30: Yoga at Capital Club - I did Wheel for the first time and it didn't hurt my elbow!

Friday:
Noon:  Junk Workout
I didn't have a plan when I got to the gym (which is bad), so it was kind of a crappy workout.  I can't remember exactly what I did, but I did several sets of lunges with a medicine ball overhead, burpees, wall balls, some abs, and then some yoga poses.

Workouts: April 2-6

Monday:  Noon:  appointment during lunch; no workout

5:30:  Core Power Yoga at Capital Club

Tuesday:
Noon:  Elliptical for 45 minutes – I was having bad stomach pains and wasn’t up for anything else (they finally went away later in the evening)

Wednesday:
Noon:  I made up what I’ll call a 100/25 workout.  It made me pretty sore, but I thought it was going to be worse than it is.
100 jump rope
25 single leg squats w/ leg on bench, 25 calf raise squats
100 jump rope
25 single leg dead lifts, 60 second wall sit (I know, it’s not 25 anything)
100 jump rope
25 reverse lunges (each leg), 25 standing side leg lifts
100 jump rope
25 super-skaters, 60 second alternating single leg wall sit
100 jump rope
25 hip extensions, 25 in and out crunches
100 jump rope
25 Toe roll iso-lunges (each leg), 25 calf raises x 3 ways (toes pointing straight, toes out, toes in)
100 jump rope
25 kettlebell deadlifts w/heaviest bell, 25 single leg speed squats (each leg)
100 jump rope

6:00:  Walked to pilates at Short North Fitness.  It wasn’t as hard as I expected.  She combined Tai Chi, Yoga, and Pilates.  I liked it well enough and will go back since I have some class passes, and she said each class is very different so it's likely others would be harder.

Thursday:
Noon: Spinning

5:30: Yoga at Capital Club – I know I usually say this class is hard, but it was particularly hard.  I think when there aren’t any new people in class, she makes it harder for the regulars.  Tons of planks and vinyasa, and no balance poses (which are easier).

Friday:
Noon:  I didn’t feel like coming up with a workout, so I asked Lo what I should do.  He gave me 3 different workouts, but I did them all, with a few modifications.
  1. 50, 40, 30, 20, 10 reps
    Jump rope, situps
I did different types of situps each round to work various abs.  In order: legs straight up crunches, straight leg lower, full situps, russian twists, in and outs
  2. 21, 15, 9 reps
Pushups (on knees still), squats w/ 12# med ball, lunges with 12# med ball
Sets were supposed to include situps, but I left them out since I already did 150.

  3. 1 round (original workout is 5 rounds for time)
20# overhead walking lunges 50 ft., 21 burpees

The third workout would have been incredibly hard if doing the whole 5 rounds.  I cooled down with 10-12 min on the elliptical.

Workouts: March 26 - 30

For some reason, this didn't seem like a very good week. I didn't get as sore as I expect, even though I thought my workouts were tough.  Hoping this week is better...

Monday:
Noon:  No workout - I was doing some research at lunch

5:30:  Core Power Yoga

Tuesday:
Noon:  P90X Legs moves

8:30: Reverse Co-ed Power League in Dublin

Wednesday:
Noon:  My own personal spinning class - I just set my workout playlist to random and spin according to what the music requires.  I get sweaty and out of breath, so I think I'm doing well with it (and the music is better than class!)

Thursday:
Noon:  Spinning

5:30: Yoga

Friday:
Noon:
100 Workout
100 squats on Bosu (standing on flat side)
90 second wall sit
80 situps (20 each of 4 styles)
70 calf raises
60 second plank
50 mountain climbers, each leg
40 reverse lunges, each leg
30 kettlebell swings
20 burpees
10 pushups

Monday, March 26, 2012

Workouts: March 19 - 23

This was just an average workout week.  I didn't do anything particularly special, but got some good workouts (and soreness) in.  My elbow isn't really getting better or getting worse, so I'm trying not to do anything extra outside of using it for volleyball, yoga, and spinning.

Monday:
Noon:  Most of the exercises from P90X Legs – I didn’t really keep track again.  Between every 2 exercises I jump roped 100 times and rowed 500 meters.
5:30:  Core Power Yoga
Tuesday:
Noon:  Elliptical Trainer 35 minutes, 80 walking lunges, hip exercises (from IT band therapy)

6:30:  Co-ed Power Volleyball in Dublin. FUN!  I love this league - I'm just a sub since I had to be replaced last year, but I'll probably sub several times this session.
Wednesday:
Noon:  No workout - Lunch with a friend
5:45:  Spinning at Arena District Fitness
Thursday:
Noon:  Spinning - this was harder than usual because she had us "hover" a lot during every song.  Hovering is when you sit just above the seat and only move your legs, keeping your upper body still - HARD.
5:30: Yoga – Great class, as usual
Friday:
Noon:  Elliptical for 40 minutes.  I was really sore from the days before, so I wanted to take it easy (and read People magazine)

Tuesday, March 20, 2012

Workouts: March 12 - 16

This was a decent workout week - my legs were sore most of the week, and after Death by Squrpees and yoga on Thursday, my back was really sore.

Monday:
Noon:  Most of the exercises from P90X Legs – I didn’t really keep track

5:30:  Core Power Yoga

Tuesday:
Noon:  I honestly can’t remember what I did. It was either Elliptical for 45 minutes or a “100 Workout”, like this:
100 jumprope
90 sec. wall sit
80 squats
70 bridge lifts
60 sec. plank
50 situps (25 full situps and 25 low ab lifts b/c upper abs were too sore from yoga to do 50 full)
40 back lunges, each leg
30 single leg dead lifts, each leg
20 jump squats
10 burpees

Wednesday:
No workout: Luncheon at work, dinner with friends that night

Thursday:
Noon: I totally forgot it was Thursday and wore my Vibrams to the gym (which I can’t spin in).  So I decided to “punish” myself and make up for the lack of workout on Wednesday with this workout I made up.
“Death by Squrpees Up and Down the Mountain”
Squrpee = a squat and a burpee.  “Death By…” workouts are were you complete one rep on the start of the first minute, two reps on the second minute, three reps on the third minute, and so on until you can no longer complete the number of reps required for that round “for example, you fail to complete 16 squrpees in the 16th minute).  I didn’t take it to failure, because I wanted to make it back down the mountain.  So I went up the mountain to 15 (15 squrpees in the 15th minute) and then back down to 1 (which was 1 burpee in the 30th minute).  I did take a 30 second break between two 15 rounds at the top of the mountain because I was DYING for some water.
It was HARD.  My face was red for about an hour after the workout.  I used the “round timer” on the Seconds Free app on my phone, which made it easy to keep track of how many reps I was supposed to be doing in each round.

5:30: Yoga – this class was hard, but good.

Friday:
Noon:  Since I didn’t spin on Thursday, I wanted to on Friday.  The spinning studio is empty at noon on Fridays, so I put on my headphones and did my own spinning class.  I just had my workout playlist set to random and it couldn’t have been more perfect.  I just fit the workout around what songs were playing to decide when to spring, jump, climb, etc.  I was just as sweaty after that class as I am after other spinning classes, so I would say it was a good workout.

Workouts: March 5 - 10

A little late posting this...

I felt like I got a little more back on track this week, probably because I made it to yoga twice, even though my lunchtime workouts weren't great on Monday and Tuesday.

Monday:
Noon:  Nap – I was “gluten-ed” at a restaurant the night before (not their fault, I didn’t ask about the enchilada sauce), so I was awake for some of the night with nausea and dry-heaving (awesome).  I was extra tired the next day from that, plus I usually get lethargic from gluten, so I slept on my office floor for that hour because I really wanted to do yoga that night and knew I wouldn’t if I wasn’t feeling better.

5:30:  Core Power Yoga – I was really excited to do yoga after having to miss it the last several times.  The Monday night class isn’t my favorite, but it’s still a heck of a workout.  The instructor gave me some options so that vinyasa pushups wouldn’t hurt my elbow – and she also watched me closely on those so I would do them “right”, so I couldn’t even slack on them (which is good, but it was hard)! There were only 2 of us taking that class, so we had lots of attention/adjustments.  The front of my shoulders were SO sore the next day, as well as the top half of my abs.

Tuesday:
Noon:  Elliptical for 45 minutes.  I didn’t do a harder workout because I gave blood that morning and wasn’t supposed to workout at all.  I figured reading People Magazine on the elliptical wasn’t too bad, even if I did the Hills program.

Wednesday:
Noon: I’m still feeling wimpy about my elbow, so I did all legs for this “100” workout:
100 jumprope
90 sec. wall sit
80 squats
70 bridge lifts
60 sec. plank
50 situps (25 full situps and 25 low ab lifts b/c upper abs were too sore from yoga to do 50 full)
40 back lunges, each leg
30 single leg dead lifts, each leg
20 jump squats
10 burpees

Thursday:
Noon: Spinning at Capital Club

5:30: Yoga – oh how I love this class…this was quite a challenge – lots of planks and vinyasa pushups and deep leg work.  I continually impress myself with how much I improve for each class (pats self on back)

Friday:
Noon:  I recommend “Seconds Free” as an Iphone app for doing Tabata or timed exercises/rounds – you can problem intervals, rest time, and amount of rounds and it will vibrate and/or beep when it’s time to change – plus you can still listen to your music in your headphones.
Tabata 50/10x4 - do each exercise for 50 sec, rest 10 sec, complete 4 rounds (I rested for 30 seconds between each round because my legs were already so sore and I needed it)
Squat Jumps
Alternating Lunges
Mountain Climbers
Squat Thrusts (burpees)
Deadlifts w/ kettlebell
Planks
